Spanish prosecutors want Shakira behind bars. On Friday, prosecutors in his ongoing criminal tax fraud case told the court that the Colombian superstar should face eight years and two months in prison if convicted of tax fraud. Along with the longer prison term, prosecutors also urged a hefty fine of 20 million euros.
Shakira is being accused of failing to pay 14.5 million euros in taxes to the government between 2012 and 2014. After being offered a plea deal earlier this year, Shakira opted to go ahead with the trial. A date has not yet been set.

A statement sent to the BBC by Shakira’s publicist said the singer “confers full confidence in her innocence” and called the case a “violation of her rights”.
The tax fraud allegations – which date back to 2018 – stemmed from allegations that Shakira spent more than half of each year in Spain between 2012 and 2014. According to Spain’s tax law, anyone who has lived in the country for more than six months is considered a resident and therefore must pay taxes. However, Shakira claims that she did not live in Spain for most of the year during that time, although she did buy a house in Barcelona in May 2012, as seen in the documents. Reuters,
Since the allegations of tax fraud were made in 2018, Shakira has said that she paid 17.2 million euros she owed to the Spanish government, per Reuters,
Shakira’s ex-husband Gerard Pique faced a 2 million euro fine in 2019 for tax evasion between 2008 and 2010.
