Bears rookie Doug Kramer is next man up at center

The Chicago Bears will be without center Lucas Patrick for the foreseeable future after head coach Matt Eberfluss confirmed an injury to Patrick’s right arm.

The injury is not expected to keep Patrick out of the season opener, but he is going to miss most of the training camp and preseason. With Patrick being sidelined indefinitely, rookie Doug Kramer is the next man at the centre.

“Obviously, this is a great opportunity,” Kramer said, via athletic, “It’s still too early in the camp, so right now I’m just trying to stay close, learn as much as I can and try to go after that spot, for sure.”

Kramer has been taking second-team reps at center throughout the offseason, and he’s emerging as the favorite for Patrick’s backup in 2022. But expect Kramer to develop into a starter for Chicago down the line.

“I’ve worked to try to get to that point, and I’ve spent a lot of time studying the playbook and trying to understand things in great detail and depth so that I can be a tool for other people on the offensive line. ,” Kramer said. “And it’s a very similar mindset to what I had in Illinois, and I’m trying to get back to that understanding of the level of detail needed to be center in this league.”

Considering that Sam Mustifer started all 17 games at center for the Bears last season, it is notable that Kramer stepped in on his way out of practice for Patrick. Kramer has been the rep in the center with starts while Mustifer has been on the right guard. But Mustafer saw some center reps at the center during Friday’s practice.

“Super smart. Able to make all the calls,” Eberfluss said of Kramer. “Sometimes you think, ‘Well, mentally it can be huge for someone to make a mic point and change safety with the quarterback and call the line and be the points man at that.’ it. understand. It is to be expected.”
