Braves pound 3 HRs, send Nationals to eighth straight loss

WASHINGTON (AP) — Austin Riley, Orlando Arcia and Adam Duvall beat the Atlanta Braves 8-4 on Friday night, giving the Nationals their eighth consecutive loss.

Atlanta improved to 9–2 against the Nationals this season and extended their winning streak to a franchise-record 13 games in Washington. The Braves have won six out of a total of eight, while the Nationals have lost their 14th time in 15 matches.

Left-hander Patrick Corbin (4-12) made his ninth straight start against Atlanta. Washington has the worst record in the Majors at 30-62 and 7-35 against NL East opponents this season.

Washington outfielder Juan Soto scored 0 for 2 with three walks, ending his career-best 16-game hitting streak.

Ian Anderson (8-5) conceded one run and scored five runs in 5 1/3 innings. He is 2-0 with a 2.30 ERA in three starts this month.

“We’re playing really well right now, and for me personally to go into the break on a note like that, I feel good,” Anderson said. “Body feels good, hands feel good. Hope I can continue with it after I come back.”

The Nationals scored three runs against Will Smith in the ninth, one on a wild pitch from AJ Minter. But after loading the bases with running again, Minter knocked out Keibert Ruiz for his fifth save.

“He had five days off, so we need to get him out there and pitch,” Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said of Smith. “He miss-hit a few balls that fell right in front of us. Minter came and did a really good job putting it down.

The Braves hit Corbin first. After reaching an error with a Dansby Swanson one and scoring on a single from Matt Olsson, Riley launched his 26th homer of the season to make it 3–0 over the visitors’ dugout. He is hitting .413 with six homers and 12 RBIs during an 11-game hitting streak and is second in the NL in homers behind Kyle Schwarber of Philadelphia.

“I can’t believe he’s not an All-Star,” Anderson said. “Everyone is saying he turned it in too late, but he’s right in the MVP talks again and it’s just a steady, steady effort. Every day he has a chance to take two or three hits and get out of the ballpark.” It happens. “

Olsson added RBI singles in second and fourth, and Arkia finished fifth to continue his season-long trend of tormenting Washington. Arcia is hitting .483 (14 of 29) against the Nationals this year, which includes three of its four players.

Corbin equaled Washington’s Joan Aidan, who is currently in the minors, in a major-league loss. The left-hander allowed six runs, five earned and nine hits in five innings, while scoring eight runs. He is the first pitcher for a team to lose nine in a row since Kansas City’s Danny Duffy made 10 in a row at Cleveland from 2015–19. He has 7.28 eras against the brave in that period.

Duvall finished ninth behind Kyle Finnegan, his second in three games since returning from the paternity list.

Doolittle said, “I don’t feel good about having surgery (but) I feel good that at this point in my career, with my elbow in the procedure, this is the right course of action for me.” “As far as I see it, 2023 is just starting. I see it as a long, extended ramp-up to the season last year.”
