Darin Ruf’s home run, bizarre balk seals Giants’ win over Brewers

Cobb sharp as Roof’s homer, late game balks Seal Giants win originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayria

Sunday’s game between the Giants and the Milwaukee Brewers at Oracle Park was pretty quiet for most of the afternoon.

Both Giants right Alex Cobb (ND, 7 1/3 IP, 4H, 1R, 0ER, 0BB, 5K) and Brewers lefty Eric Lauer (ND, 7IP, 2H, 1ER, 3BB, 4 k) went toe on the mound.

The first half of the game was very quiet until San Francisco launched the first attack with a single home run off Darin Roof’s bat at the bottom of the sixth inning.

Cobb continued to deal, pitching in the eighth inning before an Umar Navarez sacrificial fly brought home a Brewers run, tying the game at one.

The Giants loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning after Austin Slater and Wilmer Flores singles, followed by a hit-by-pitch by Ivan Longoria with two outs.

Mike Yastrzemski came to the plate with a loaded bass (sound familiar?) and a balk Jandal Gustav called on the Brewers reliever, scoring Flores from third, giving the Giants a 2–1 lead.

The Brewers made some noise in the ninth when Willie Adams singled out to lead the innings, moving to second on a wild pickoff attempt from Dominic Lyon.

Lyon eventually closed the door on the Brewers in a 2–1 win.
