Filipino center Kai Sotto to return to NBL for 2022-23 season

Kai Soto, a 7-foot-2 center from the Philippines, announced on Friday that he will return to play with the Adelaide 36ers in the National Basketball League for the 2022-23 season.

Soto, a former four-star prospect, averaged 7.5 points and 4.5 rebounds on 50% shoots last season with 36 appearances in 23 games. He scored perhaps his best game of the season on 10 April, when he registered a career-high 21 points.

The 20-year-old announced for the NBA draft in April and worked for at least seven teams throughout the process. However, he was not drawn on 23 June and eventually did not appear in a squad for the Summer League earlier this month.

Soto previously signed with NBA G League Ignite for the 2020–21 season, but never turned friendly due to prior obligations with the Philippines national team. He was the first international player to sign a contract with Zee League.

Now he will have the opportunity to continue playing with 36 players next season in an effort to play in the NBA. The NBL has helped many players make it to the NBA in recent memory and Soto looks to be next in line after another year.

The 36ers will start next season on 13 October against the Tasmania Jackjumpers.

The Cavs selected Luke Travers in the second round to return to the NBL for the 2022–23 season.
