That’s what we like to see. Jameis Winston returned well from a pair of interceptions to open Saturday’s practice session at the New Orleans Saints training camp, joining rookie wideout Chris Olev on a 60-yard touchdown pass to end the day on a high note.
We were lucky enough to get a couple of different angles into the day’s play, but the best looks can only come from the official Saints Twitter account. It’s hard to blame anyone on the big game on defense in particular, but from what we can see it looks like Marshan Latimore was initially lined up against Olev before going for a safety assist.
But there was no safety in the deep wait – PJ Williams came down instead to meet Lattimore on the sidelines, leaving Olev open as he ran further downfield. Winston saw this unfold and stepped into the pocket to launch a high-arching pass for six points into the hands of the rookie, triggering a round of applause from the fans present.
It was a brilliant rebound to an ugly start, with defensive backs CJ Gardner-Johnson and Bradley Robbie both seeing takeaways to open the team’s period. Saints coach Dennis Allen credited Winston for improving the media availability session after his practice.
“I thought he answered the next two plays,” Allen Told WWL’s Jeff Novako, “And I told him out on the field: That’s what you have to be able to do. This game is not a perfect game to be played by perfect people, and there are going to be mistakes, and how do you respond to them? I thought He has done a good job of answering them.”
It’s exciting to see this big play from Olev as well. It’s a good reminder that he adds a whole new element to offense and shouldn’t be lost in the shuffle with Michael Thomas and Jarvis Landry in the mix. There are high expectations for the first round selection and he is reacting accordingly. Impressive moments like these will go a long way toward instilling confidence in his quarterback, and that bodes well for his future. Saint is off on Sunday, but he will return to work on Monday in his first padded practice. Let’s see if Olev can keep the momentum going.
