Lakers may go after Julius Randle if Knicks get Donovan Mitchell

Over the past few weeks, the rumor mill for the Los Angeles Lakers has calmed down a bit.

Their efforts to acquire Kyrie Irving went nowhere, and although there have been reports that they may be interested in capturing Buddy Heald and Miles Turner, nothing is even close to being done.

Elsewhere around the league, Utah Jazz star Donovan Mitchell is rumored to be on the move, possibly to the New York Knicks.

Prominent NBA writer Mark Stein said during a Spotify Live session that LA might be interested in moving Julius Randall and the Knicks could agree to such a deal if they land Mitchell.

The Lakers’ latest attempt is to bring in some team to take Russell Westbrook off their hands. However, it’s hard to understand why they want Randall.

The 6-foot-9 big man played his first four seasons with him, and he showed great potential during that period, averaging 13.5 points and 8.9 rebounds a game, shooting 49.3 percent off the ground.

As a Nike, Randall became his best self in the 2020-21 campaign, earning his first All-Star bid, but this past season, his numbers, especially his shooting percentage, were thrown off the George Washington Bridge. Fell like a rock.

His skill set does not fit with that of LeBron James or Anthony Davis, as he is not a particularly good 3-point shooter or effective off-the-ball player.

In addition, Randall has four years remaining on his contract worth more than $20 million per season. If the Lakers are unwilling to back Joe Harris’s contract in a potential Irving trade that could very well fit with them, why would they want a bigger contract for a player who would be a bad fit?
