Lauren Murphy batters Miesha Tate to spoil flyweight debut

Misha Tait’s flyweight debut didn’t go as planned.

The former UFC and Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion lost in a unanimous decision to UFC veteran Lauren Murphy on Saturday on ABC 3. The scores read 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.

The women’s flyweight bout opened the UFC on the ABC 3 main card at the UBS Arena in Elmont, NY.

The fight began competitive, but as the minutes progressed, the tide clearly turned in Murphy’s favor.

In the first round, Tate (19-8 MMA, 6-5 UFC) had decent success with his jab. She connected cleanly and often. Murphy (16-5 MMA, 8-5 UFC) did a good job at countering it several times and would come out on top with a right-handed counter. With two minutes left, Tate attempted a takedown but was unsuccessful and pressed Murphy against the cage. From there, the two fighters alternately switched positions and went back and forth in the clinic. They broke in the last 10 seconds, but neither of them did much to end the round.

At the start of the second, Murphy connected sharply and Tate’s nose was bleeding. Shortly after, he did a takedown and landed some nice ground-and-pounds to go with it. Control did not last long, as Tet would quickly get up. From there both the fighters started on their feet. Tate had good success, but Murphy’s jab seemed to be the most important technique in the exchanges. In the final minute, Tate pressed Murphy against the cage but failed to obtain a takedown. Tate controlled the action until the bell.

In the final round, Tate looked to get a takedown, but Murphy was able to defend the effort. In the process, Murphy slammed the former champion on the feet and his nose was bleeding, and his eye began to close. Credit to Tate, who got Murphy the fight all the time, but Murphy was able to withstand the pressure and take damage.

With this result, Murphy was able to bounce back from her loss to champion Valentina Shevchenko in September 2021. Murphy is 6-1 with his only loss to Shevchenko since 2019. The victory at Tate marks Murphy’s first victory against a former UFC champion.

Meanwhile, the defeat for Tate was a sign of a failed flyweight start. “Cupcakes” was retired in 2016, but came back in mid-2021 with a major victory over Marion Reno. She then returned in November and revoked the ruling against Brazil’s Caitlain Vieira. Tet is 1-2 since coming back from retirement.
