Oklahoma Sooners ranked No. 13 in Athlon Sports’ 1-131 NCAA Football rankings

Athlon Sports recently ranked every single FBS team, from the diminutive UMass Minutemen to the major Alabama Crimson Tide. We’re at the peak of “preview magazine” season, and Athlon Sports has put together quite the list for us.

As they call it, these rankings are what they think things will look like at the end of the season, so yes, according to Athlon, Alabama is due for yet another national championship.

Wow.

The Sooners check in at number 13. While Steven Lawson is pretty fair in his assessment of Oklahoma, 13 seems a bit low.

The Sooners lost a lot of important pieces in the off-season, which is the focus of the beginning of Lassen’s blurb.

The Sooners of Season can be described in just one word: change. Brent Venables took over as head coach after Lincoln Riley left for USC, and the program also experienced its share of roster turnover with just nine returning starters for ’22. Losing Caleb Williams (USC) and Spencer Rattler (South Carolina) was a blow to the quarterback room, but Venables and new play-caller Jeff Laby resolved their concerns by bringing in UCF transfer Dylan Gabriel under center. The Hawaii native played under Laby in Orlando in ’19 and should find a comfortable fit again at Norman. A common theme in many of these season preview articles is asking whether Brent Venables is really head coach material. It is not so here. Lassan admires Venables’ defensive mind and expects OU’s defense to improve substantially.

There are some things that OU fans are not going to like.

First, they are not the biggest 12 teams; There is a boiler. Also USC is in the top ten. While the Trojans should see a jump from the abysmal record of 4-8 they set in 2021, No. 9 in the country is no mean feat ahead of Oregon (No. 10).

Lassan feels the Big 12 lacks a clear favourite. So far, it’s true. However, we’ll know more after the three matchups of Sooners Week in Nebraska. After last year’s disappointing game against the Cornhuskers, Brent Venables will have an opportunity to show that the Sooners are in the right hands.
