Four years ago, Ryan Garcia, Teofimo López, Devin Haney and Gervonta Davis were all light-weights with sizable personalities who were full of talent.

Speed, power, agility, intelligence, charisma, punching accuracy, courage – you name it, this quartet had it all.

And now they are in their prime and it is time for them to become a modern version of the Four Kings. Sugar Ray Leonard, the Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns and Roberto Duran became known together as “The Four Kings” in the 1980s, largely because of their ethereal talent and their willingness to fight anyone, at any time. Time to prove they were the best.

The same opportunity in legendary status now awaits Garcia, Davis, Honey and Lopez. They are 94-1 with 72 knockouts and have basically put themselves above the rest of the field.

It’s time for them to fight with each other.

García played his part on Saturday, dropping former champion Javier Fortuna three times and knocking out 27 seconds in the sixth round of a fight controlled for every second.

Fortuna called the fight to be on 140, not 135, as he admitted he could not make 135. And he was scoring 157 in the ring after rehydrating. He was slow and not as fast as before.

But it mattered very little. Fortuna at its peak will have no chance against Garcia entering the ring at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Honey is the undisputed lightweight champion, while Davis holds the secondary belt. But Garcia knocks out Davis, who is seventh on the Yahoo Sports pound-for-pound list, for his next fight.

This is a great fight that must be made. Of course, the issues between Golden Boy Promotions and Mayweather Promotions and broadcasters DAZN and Showtime would make it a high-wire act to accomplish this.

But these are great fighters in their prime that sell both arenas. They want to fight with each other.

This is a fight that must be made because it has the potential to be what has been talked about for decades.

Garcia’s hand movement was evident on Saturday, although Fortuna didn’t show him the respect he should have. Coming in good shape. He was slow and angry and out of his league.

He was dropped three times, once in the fourth with a wicked left hook to the body that was reminiscent of Mickey Ward’s best body punches. He then put Fortuna down the head to the left in the fifth and stopped him with another left over the head in the sixth.

Fortuna knelt down and spit out the mouthpiece, a clear sign of dedication. Referee Jerry Cantu counted 10 for Garcia to win.

“I hit hard,” Garcia said. “It doesn’t take me long to hurt someone.”

But Davis is one of the best fighters in the world and would certainly be ready if he fought Garcia. Yahoo Sports texted Leonard Ellerbe of Mayweather Promotions to see if he would be interested in a Garcia-Davis fight, but he failed to respond.

Davis will likely be the favorite in that fight, as he is above anyone fighting Garcia, but the fight would be crazier in the ring. Each has a strong and supportive fan base and is a fight that will sell out in any arena and will likely surpass 500,000 on pay-per-views.

What else would need to be done to make this a reality?

Garcia played his part by looking great in the ring and only mentioning Davis’ name after that. He stated that he would never go back to a lighter weight as he has outlasted the division so he challenged Davis to a fight at 140.

Davis held Mario Barrios to a secondary 140-pound title on June 26, 2021, so he’s pretty familiar with the super lightweight division.

Davis needs Garcia as much as Garcia needs him. DAZN broadcasters referred to Garcia repeatedly on Saturday as a superstar, and although he has superstar potential, he hasn’t quite reached that level yet.

To keep him there would be an upper echelon victory over the choice of one of the other modern four kings. Beat Davis next time and yes, no one at that point hates Garcia who doesn’t accept Garcia as a superstar. But it goes both ways, and the same is true for Davis.

There have already been a lot of great fights in 2022 and the promise of another fight exists. Negotiations are progressing to see Errol Spence Jr. and Terrence Crawford face off together for the undisputed welterweight title.

Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin will meet in September for the undisputed super middleweight title.

And what would be the end of the year if Davis and Garcia met at a mega-event for £140.

Who cares if it’s for an approved body belt? Those groups are more of a problem than a solution.

It’s the fight, and the fighters that matter.

And it wouldn’t get better than a super lightweight fight between Garcia and Davis.

“Where there is a will, there is a way,” said Garcia.

so be it.

Complete it without delay.
