Michael Kopech (3-6) finished five innings for his first win in eight starts, going a step further after an ugly stretch in June and a July 5 defeat when he conceded six to the Twins.

Andrew Vaughan batted first with a two-run single for the White Sox, reducing their deficit to three games at the AL Central. Cleveland defeated Detroit and crept within 2 1/2 games of the Twins, who have lost two games of the field to both the Guardian and the White Sox, losing the first two games in the series.

After winning the division by 13 games over Cleveland and 20 games over Minnesota last season, the White Sox were again the consensus AL Central favorites with a substantial collection of All-Stars.

Instead, the Twins are in front of everyone on April 24, a day after completing a three-game sweep in Chicago. Thus, this four-game series has provided the White Sox an ideal opportunity to build on their solid start. Take a significant step up in the standings entering the break for the month. Both teams play nine times in September, including six games in the final nine days of the regular season.

The White Sox were energized in their 12-2 victory in Thursday night’s opener, with Robert delivering a decisive blow to the 452-foot Grand Slam.

Vaughan, who is batting at .345 .345 on the road to the second-best average in the AL behind only teammate Jose Abreu, paid Twins starter Devin Smeltzer to lose Robert and Abreu. Robert was down 0-2 on the count and Abreu was at 2-2 before each one could run. With the base loaded, Vaughan ripped a line drive to the left for a second two-RBI game in a row.

Alex Kiriloff tied it in the bottom half with a two-run double off Kopech, but the right-hander responded by allowing only two hits to the last 17 batsmen. He was single in fourth, but he fielded Carlos Correa in an innings-ending double play.

so close

Anderson’s homer from Emilio Pagan (3-4) landed in the White Sox bullpen, barely out of glove reach from center fielder Nick Gordon – Byron Buxton took a turn as Minnesota’s designated hitter. Gordon made his jump well, but the ball went just an inch or so away. After the replay was shown on the videoboard, the crowd groaned to see how close he had come to taking the catch.

Anderson showed his leather in the following innings, when he was transferred right from shortstop against Max Kepler and intercepted a sharp line drive at the top of his jump.
